How Does IPL Photofacial Work?
IPL Photofacials use a broad spectrum of light targeted to the lower layers of the epidermis causing the skin to produce new collagen and connective tissue while reducing abnormal pigmentations. They thus support the upper skin layer better and makes the skin surface smoother and with a more uniform color. IPL Photofacials also targets vascular lesions and symptoms of rosacea and signs of photoaging.
What Does IPL Photofacial Treat?
IPL Photofacials improves vascular complexion problems such as vascular redness (telangiectasias) and rosacea by up to 80 to 90%. They also treat sun-damaged skin, large pores, hyperpigmentation. IPL Photofacials are also used as a preventative measure against common signs of aging and a wide range of skin types can be treated.
What Are IPL Photofacial Treatments Like?
IPL Photofacial treatments usually take less than thirty minutes in our office. Most patients will have a series of five to eight treatments; each treatment is about three weeks apart. IPL Photofacials have low levels of discomfort. Topical anesthetics are usually not required, but can be used if the patient chooses to do so. A handpiece is placed over the treatment area and delivers the light energy which can feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin.
What Can Go Wrong?
Immediately after treatment with the IPL Photofacial, the skin may feel warm and appear pink (easily covered with makeup). Occasionally mild swelling or bruising can occur. Most patients can return to work immediately. Because IPL Photofacials are nonablative treatments (nonharming), risk is greatly reduced. Rarely do burns or abnormal depigmentations occur.
What should I expect from IPL Photofacial Treatment?
Because IPL Photofacials are performed in a series, you will see more improvement after each treatment. After the first session, skin will already look and feel smoother and will have a more even skin tone. Over time sunspots will fade, pore size will reduce and fine lines and wrinkles will smooth out. Rosacea patients will see a progressive improvement with each appointment. Abnormal sun spots, aging spots will fade with each session.

WHY IS THE CO2 LASER RESURFACING TECHNIQUE THE BEST?
The CO2 laser is considered the standard for laser resurfacing. Used for years to remove the aging outer layer of the skin to allow the inner skin tissue to regenerate, it successfully helps form newer, smoother and more youthful appearing skin. It effectively stimulates new collagen growth in the deeper skin layer, improves the damage caused by the sun, plumps the skin, removes unwanted pigmentations, smoothes wrinkles, improves acne scars, and tightens the skin. Thus, essentially almost all the changes of aging can be treated with this amazing new laser technology. However, some conditions like melasma and stretch marks may benefit more from non-ablative resurfacing.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY FROM LASER RESURFACING?
The ablative type of laser resurfacing. Thus, because it destroys the superficial layer of skin cells, it has more downtime than the nonablative techniques. However, it produces far superior results. The best part of this story is that relative to the older CO2 laser resurfacing techniques, this fractionated CO2 laser results in much less downtime. Most people are able to go back to normal work and activities within a few days to a week, depending on the depth of the treatment. This is about a third of the healing time required with older traditional laser resurfacing. The non-ablative type of laser resurfacing requires less downtime leaving your skin feeling like a sunburn for about an hour followed by minimal discomfort. The skin may be red and swollen for 24 to 72 hours. As the skin is healing it may have a pinkish tone which may last 5 to 7 days. Generally, your skin will continue to improve as the collagen regenerates for up to 6 months. The recovery of these procedures and all of your post care will be explained to you during your consultation.
HOW IS THE PROCEDURE DONE?
The procedure is performed in the office using only local analgesics with mild sedation as needed. Numbing cream and/or regional blocks can be utilized to make the procedure comfortable. It takes only around an hour to do the whole process. Afterwards, most patients complain of just mild discomfort treated with pain medications. The entire procedure will be explained to you during your consultation.
CAN OTHER PROCEDURES BE DONE AT THE SAME TIME?
Laser resurfacing can be combined with other facial rejuvenating techniques to give you the best results with the least downtime. Botox can help eliminate wrinkles that form in the upper face and around the eyes from dynamic muscle contractions. Facial fillers, such as Juvederm, Radiesse and Sculptra can replenish the volume that is lost as you get older. IPL Photofacial treatments can fade and decrease the age-spots, sun spots and facial vessels to enhance the effect of the laser resurfacing on these changes. Combining these options can enhance the results of laser resurfacing to rejuvenate your face even more.
ARE PEOPLE HAPPY ABOUT THE RESULTS?

How does Laser Hair Removal work?
The Palomar hair removal hand piece emits pulses of light into the hair follicle. The light is absorbed by the pigment in follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair.
What are Laser Hair Removal treatments like?
A topical gel will be applied and Dr. Serrao will move the handpiece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin into the hair follicle. A flashing light, and audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed. Most patients experience a little discomfort. Some patients may feel heat or a slight stinging sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.
How long does the treatment usually last?
The duration varies depending on your individual needs and the size of the area to be treated. Appointments usually range from a half hour to an hour. Small areas, such as the underarms or upper lip can be treated in ten minutes or less, and even large areas, like the back or legs, can be treated in under a half hour.
What body areas can I get treated?
Any area may be treated, except directly around the eyes. The upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, chest, arms, back, and legs can all be treated.
What should I expect after treatment?
Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts two to twenty-four hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs. The treated hair will continue to appear for seven to thirty days post-treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin. At any given time, some of your hair is not in a phase of active growth. Therefore you will need more than one treatment to affect the growth of all your unwanted hair. Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction.
How many treatments are needed?
Because hair can only be affected during certain growth cycles, several treatments are necessary. Usually five to seven sessions are required to achieve the desired effect.
How long do the results last?
The hair reduction should be permanent, though it will not eliminate 100% of hair growth, and occasional touch-ups may be necessary.
